I've been out of work 4 weeks for a surgery I needed. Could have stayed out longer but didnt, came back when I felt able and the doctor cleared me. 4 days in to my 1st week back and I find out a family member whose had cancer passed away this morning. I'm apprehensive about mentioning this to my boss because I've just come back to work. I know I shouldn't feel like this but I cant be the only one that would be thinking the same in this situation can i?
I live in the States and am on Medicaid, however, I am curious to know if you can change the price of medical treatment or essential medication for the patients who have to pay out of pocket for insurance rather than letting greedy corporations charge whatever they want even for holding your newborn baby.
I mean really? If even a few workers at a gas station said fuck it gas today is going to be 1.89 and it snowballed nationally what would the gov't do? I mean gas station clerk is a more dangerous job than of a police officer… Why hasn't there been a Palahnuik level revolt against corporate greed? Why stop at gas, what's another commodity that's overpriced and under paid? Anyways just a thought that occurred to me while I spent $20 MORE on filling up my car this morning.
Employee survey results
I don’t know why I am shocked but management posted their summary of the employee survey results and it’s just… it’s got me pissed off. Two of the main places employees indicated need work are workload and compensation – our firm undercompensates compared to the rest of our industry – and one of the reasons they put the survey out there was to understand why there is so much turnover. So tell me why the response to workload issues was basically “work smarter, not harder” ie learn time management skills and turn down any non value added tasks. And the compensation issue was “you need to look at all your benefits as part of your total compensation”. So pretty much thanks for your feedback but we aren’t going to make any changes. And the attrition will continue and they will continue to wonder why.
Nice guys do finish last.
An excerpt from the book BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE by ERIC BARKER. I thought you guys will find this interesting. “In the short term, sometimes being bad can be very good. “Work hard, play fair, and you'll get ahead,” they say. Um, sorry but there's actually a lot of evidence that shows this just isn't the case. People surveyed say effort is the number-one predictor of success, but research shows it's actually one of the worst. Appearances seem to trump truth at the office. According to Stanford Graduate School of Business professor Jeffrey Pfeffer, managing what your boss thinks of you is far more important than actual hard work. A study shows that those who made a good impression got better performance reviews than those who worked harder but didn't manage impressions as well. Often this comes down to something we're all very familiar with: good ol' ass kissing.…
Without giving too much away – the executive for a business unit of ours recently had to step in and do entry level work as they cannot find workers for the poverty wages they hire entry level workers at. So no workers and things need to keep going or we get way out of compliance with our contracts so the executive stepped in and did what they had to do to keep it going. The Executive team saw this persons pure courage to step in and get the job done rather then hiring at a few bucks more an hour to attract talent…so they gave them a 20k bonus for being a team player. This stuff just bothers me.
Burn out and WFH
I will always be a supporter of working from home. I work in the corporate sphere with a hybrid schedule where I'm in the office 3 days a week and home for two. I know there's a lot of online humor about how WFH can mean doing anything else but work. I like working in my apartment because I don't have a manager breathing down my neck every minute of the day. I've worked from home since the start of the pandemic and I know that I can be productive, but I've hit a point where it is such a relief to be out of the office that my concentration tanks and part of me doesn't care. My days in the office have been productive enough to keep me afloat and the few activities I do at home have supported it. My 90-day review last week went well and I…
You could probably guess what they picked lol.
