This thing I learned about my old company is really bothering me

Sorry if this doesn’t belong here mods. And sorry for the length just have to get this out somewhere. I learned something about my old company that’s really bothering me and I wanted to share with y’all. Backstory: So I worked for a company for 5.5 years and left last year. I enjoyed the experience 95% of the time and was sad to leave. I was a team lead and trying to get into management I spoke to my boss and his boss (director level) and they agreed that with my prior experience and years of service and leadership I should totally be in the running for a promotion. Only problem, there weren’t any positions open and so I waited a year for something to come up but nothing did (that I was interested in). Then C level announced a hiring freeze with an unknown end date and that was…

Starbucks Employment Marketing vs Reality

Starbucks has successfully marketed its image as a place of employment that cares about its baristas for a long time. It has only recently come to light some of the mistreatment baristas endure through the persistence of fellow baristas fighting for our labor rights through either attempting to or successfully organizing unions. As someone who works there as a second job, and lives with someone who works there as a primary job, I want to bring to light the true Starbucks “Employee” Experience. The individual I live with applied for a full time barista job on the company website. When discussing hours per week in the initial interview, they asked for at minimum 30 a week. The interviewer explained that this would be possible in time; however due to training it might be a slow start up. With the presumption it would not be too long of a duration, the…

Unpaid online training?

I recently started working at a bar and the job is rewarding and fun, but there’s one manager no one really likes. This manager has informed me I have 3 hours of online training to complete by wednesday, in order for me to be ‘fully employed legally’, as it’s a requirement in my area that bar staff are trained in these areas. I’m fine with doing it but it’s completely unpaid, so I work 20 hours a week whilst studying for a degree, and I have to do this online training in my own time? Yesterday he even said to me ‘there’s no time during shifts but bus rides home are a good time to be doing this stuff’. I’m not doing a 9 hour shift, finishing at 1am then doing an hours more UNPAID work on my bus ride home, thanks. I’m seriously considering refusing to do it unless…

How do I shift my focus from money to personal satisfaction?

Hi all! I'm not giving up my job any time soon because I have financial responsibilities. However, I want to o focus more of my personal energy on my creative endeavours. When I was a teen, I went to school because I had to but still did all my creative stuff with friends at weekends and holidays. I want to recapture this, but I'm always worried about “but art/theatre/film/music doesn't make money!” I want to be able to enjoy my creativity without judging its worth on money. I know I'll never make a living off a creative life, but part of me says that means it's not worth my time. How do I change my mindset?

So how are you supposed to improve your social life, fitness life, or learn a better “skill” when you can’t pay your bills with one job?

America is a weird country. It’s awful living here if you’re single with no kids. You get screwed the most. Your supposed to work yourself to death while getting into fitness and going to college. If someone works 50-60 hours the last thing they want to do is go out to a party, bar or club or any social event to meet people. I didn’t even mention that working 1 full time job isn’t even enough to pay your bills. And if you can’t afford any hobbies or any joy of life it’s “your fault”.

The Semi-Quiet Radical

Most of those who know me realize I am left leaning, but I don’t think they realize how radical I really am compared to current society norms. And as time passes and I grow older, I only get more radical in my ideals. The basic concept is pretty simple: Tax the rich and businesses like crazy Implement UBI The “fat” of societies jobs will be trimmed. We don’t need a majority of professions in existence now. Whole industries can be eliminated. Others, we are at a point in our technology that many can be automated. The rest? They are going to have to convince us to work there. If I don’t need your job to satisfy any of my basic needs, then it’ll have to be something I am passionate about or it’ll have to contribute to my luxuries enough to justify my time. I realize there are other questions…

How do I lie in my interview?

I have an interview on Monday for a job that I’m pretty sure I’m going to get and definitely want. It’s right up the street from my house, pretty easy 9-5 type with major holidays off + PTO and the rest of the standard benefits. The pay isn’t great but will cover my bills and allow me to save. The thing is, I’m also interviewing for another position that’s relatively similar but paying $7/hr more with the catch being that I’d have to relocate. I’m not in a position to relocate but I want to negotiate my pay with the local job and see if I can get closer to the pay of the job I’d relocate for. I want to just lie and say I already have the offer for the higher rate but I’m scared about how to do it. Any suggestions on how to do this??

Getting your foot in the door isn’t a good enough reason.

I recently got a job at an organization that I love and support. The work they do is meaningful and is helping the planet. I was over the moon when I got the job, even though it's entry level, because I imagined myself climbing the ranks and getting the job of my dreams within a few years. I'm a romantic. The reality is I'm working part time because they don't want to offer insurance or full time benefits until I prove myself a reliable worker, which is common in businesses now. I make $14 an hour and can't afford my rent unless I get another part time job. I also live in the southern US, and the cost of living is lower here than most other places. I'm tired of being excited by any and all job offers, only to come to my senses a few days in when I…
