This literally just happened. I received a text message, stating that someone found my resume on CareerBuilder, and asked if I was still seeking employment. I responded that I might be interested, but would need to know more about the position, including where to find an official job posting. I got a brief response back, indicating that it was an entry level management position that offers full training; maintaining business accounts, as well as leading and supervising a small team. This response also asked if I would be available at 'date/time.' Just because I was still curious, I indicated that I was available for that meeting, but again wanted to see a job posting, so that I would be fully prepared for an interview. An immediate response confirmed my interview, provided their address, and was told to bring a resume and dress professionally. By now, the red flags were going…
“Hard work is rewarded with more work.”
This is a direct quote from a presenter explaining how to advance your career at my employer to a room full of overworked people. This was presented as a positive thing, and you should be happy to receive this reward. This is not how it should work. Do not put up with this mentality. If you are doing more work, then you deserve more pay. Document what you do and make your case for more money or keep looking for a place that will compensate you properly. To the managers that do this to their employees: “Fuck you. Pay us!”
Sadly after having certain disagreements with management I decided to hand in my 4 weeks notice. Rather than battle out my point of view I choose to wave the flag and leave amicably without going into too much detail. employee's get a leaving do or something arranged whether it a small token or whatever. Don't think much of it as the person leaving is never cc'd in for the “surprise”. Anyways the weeks go on plodding along, then we arrive to my last week, Still nothing.. At this point I expected there would be nothing, which I was fine with. Happy just to say my good byes and leave. Then we finally get to the day of Glory, the day of no return.. My final day. I get to the office and turns out everyone, minus one other sales guy and our receptionist was WFH.. Not even my manager came…
Daddy knows best?
Whenever an executive sends an email asking to like or share their promotions using my personal LinkedIn account, I can’t help but feel violated. I wish I could tell them that I was not hired to be their perky cheerleader. The company has the budget to do their own advertising. No need to exploit their employees!
This post made me recall this story. https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/tys7z5/in_1973_could_you_really_survive_with_just_a/ I have an older friend that is now a retired nurse. In 1968 he took a job as a 'dock manager' for lack of a better term, He wasn't required to do hard labor just mainly direct others to unload here or load there, pallets, boxes, etc. He also had to keep a ledger of the comings and goings of trucks and goods. It was a union job and paid about $13 an hour. This was when you could buy a McDonald's lunch (burger fries and coke) for less than $2. A new car, like a Camaro was $2,700. Basically, 5 weeks of wages would pay for the car. It took about 1900 hrs to be able to buy and pay off the avg house back then. Today people scramble for a 'living wage' and while figures range, I'll use $17 or…
