The affects of capitalism and my mental health issues have made me regret having a kid

I know I sound like a shitty person for saying this, but I regret having my son. I don't regret the experiences that I've had and will continue to have with him. I regret bringing him into the world at such a fucked time. I was young and in love with my partner and had this mentality of “I'll overcome my severe social anxiety and become a productive member of society for my kid's sake.” Here I am, two and half years later, 21 years old and mentally worse off than what I was. Still no job or will to do anything. My boyfriend makes 13 an hour and we barely get by on that. We are lucky to live in a semi cheap city, although our rent just got raised by 30 dollars per month for whatever the fuck reason. I've had mental health issues for as long as…

In this job market, always ask for more money

Here’s a little story: I had a very poor performing person on my team do us all a favor and suddenly move to Canada (apparently he had been on a waiting list of some kind). He had been on a PIP, and he had shown some improvement, but he was never going to excel. He actually gave no notice, which meant he forfeited the payout for unused, leave time. He was making about $88,000 as a web writer and editor. We quickly got the position listed, and after reviewing over 100 applications, we were ready to make an offer — and it was by far the best candidate we had. There was a problem: I missed that somebody in HR had set the salary range at $70-80K. My options were to delay the offer and make the case for why it should be higher (and I knew she had other…

Paid less than hourly employees (and bosses hid it from me)—but do benefits balance it out?

I work at a non-profit based in Quebec. I really like the place. I started as a clerk back in 2016, and it was a minimum-wage, hourly position. Minimum wage pre-pandemic was around $12.50 or so. It's currently $14.25. All of the clerks were laid off back in March 2020. I went back to school. I did odd jobs for them a few times. I was brought on again for $14.00/hr in the summer of 2021. A month later, they offered me an assistant manager position. It's a salaried position, with benefits, but they broke it down for me in hourly terms. They initially offered $15. I tried negotiating higher, but the best they could do is $15.50 ($31,200). They hired clerks a month later, and I supervise them. One of my other tasks was supposed to be payroll, but my supervisor decided to take that on for this year.…

My former manager basically admitted that he fosters a sociopathic workplace.

While not saying the sociopathy part, he described their leadership style as basically none, with a sink or swim mentality. You will be blamed for anything that goes awry, without realistic guidance or upper managerial responsibility.

Modernized, educated, working class hell went global and I hate it.

My cousins in our home country have it easy compared to our parents gen. Cars, smartphones, supermarkets, no time for family, no time for hobbies, no hope of buying a home , lifetimes worth of deb…hmmmm wait a minute. in the 60's and 70's my parents generation traveled to the u.s. or work and school. Some already had degrees or training and just came for work. Their quality of life went up being in the U.S. and back home because of remittances until the feds started cracking down on Black immigrants (legal or otherwise) in the 1980's onward. On my dad's side everyone but him got deported or didn't get their visas renewed despite all of them being gainfully employed and staying out of trouble A Around that time their home country got hit by violence from cartels AND economic sanctions from the u.s. even tho the cartels were backed by…

I was sent a package…

A few weeks back I applied for an assistant position. They emailed me back saying that the position had been filled but they had a personal assistant job available and would send that person my resume. I agreed. He quickly hired me through email and things started to get weird. He said he was in Canada but would send me my first assignment.i wasn't too invested in this job, for the most part I went about my everyday life. A couple weeks went by and I had not heard from him so I assumed it was a scam. Then he messaged me saying he sent something to my address and it should be delivered soon. And I would get paid an extra $200 for gas and feeding. Instantly I got freaked out and told him that I was not interested. He got upset. I ignored him. But now I got…

Learn ab issues that effect workers in other places before and after they hit the news

Sanctions is a prime example. Folks may, in light of the Ukraine-Russia war, all of the sudden heard about western sanctions on Russia and think “Yeah OK Sanctions sure that's like…taking yachts right?” and it can be. But the longest standing economic sanctions by the U.S. are on places you will scratch your head trying to understand why and have effects that you'll have a hard time understanding what that's necessary. Some examples. Cuba – The blockade has, for 60+ years, made food, basic medical products, basic equipment like tractors or farming equipment, damn near impossible for average Cubans to get. The U.S. still claims it (sanctions) will someday collapse Cuba's government but at this point it's clear that's not gonna happen and either way it only makes workers in Cuba suffer. Zimbabwe – The Black majority of Zimbabwe ended the brutal apartheid regime and started to repatriate a lot…

How I got out of a job that almost costed me my life

When someone says that no job is worth your life. They are so fucking true. And three years ago, I was doing a pretty mienrable job in manufacturing. Packing stuff for most of the time. I was there for 2 and a half years. After some time passed to where I was really starting to feel like I was getting suicidal, (back in 2019) and whenever we had some downtime, I remembered I used to take this box cutter out of my pocket and just stare at it for a while. Having the most terrible thoughts you could only think of… thankfully, that was when it was time for me to get as far the hell away from that place as I possibly could. I needed to eventually go on disability to this very day though. Due to being unable to function I guess in society has made me more…
