Got my first job at 18, I want to be an engineer so I found a spot at my dad's job in the CNC department. It. Was. Awful. 8 hour long days, no hearing protection, the loudest machines you could imagine working with, and I was there working on them. There was always a mist of faintly burning/chemical scent all around everything, coming from a chemical in the coolant they used. I knew after day 1 I wouldn't be able to keep it up for more than a week or two, so I notified my new boss that I likely wouldn't stay. I was promptly spoken to like a child for not being strong or willful enough to work there, and he told me that the other guys would probably have to work extra while they hired someone else, so I said I would see I ended up working there…
Last year I had applied as a part time dishwasher at a Snooze, which is basically a Dennys that serves booze. The first hour of training revolved around the boss going over rules and regulations, company policy, etc. At one point he began gloating about this program where employees could give part of their paychecks to this collective fund for other employees to request money from in cases of financial emergencies. The boss kept bragging about how these employee contributions helped cover some of the medical costs for a specific employee who was battling cancer at the time. I didn't realize it until later that management expected staff to make donations instead of just giving them benefits. I quit after 2 hours of grueling work, which would've been tolerable if the head dishwasher wasn't micro managing everything I did and rush/insult me the entire shift.
Is this retaliation?
So a coworker went to HR because she had an issue with our boss (basically boss is a micromanager and nitpicks. My coworker became quieter as to not be belittled, boss countered that coworker was no longer participating. Plus other issues) So this coworker went to HR and HR took her to the bosses boss. Bosses boss said that coworker had a negitive attitude and needed to take attitude seminar, got suspended for a short amount of time and written up. Is this retaliation? Suspension was waived because coworker has never had a write up in the decades they worked there. Now my other coworkers are afraid today go to HR because they dont want to be punished. In reference, bosses boss was friends with boss before being hired in, and thats how she got the job. They acctually had to change the title because boss isnt qualified for the…
Without a minimum wage companies could lowball you all they wanted. BUT the transparency would make it clear even before you apply what you would get from the employer in compensation and non-monetary benefits. Without transparency you have no idea what compensation the employer has budgeted for any given role. BUT a minimum wage would guarantee that an employer couldn't lowball you below a certain point.

No outside food allowed.
I work as a deliver driver and I have for the past 3 years under the same company. There are many times where I am the only driver and I've worked months straight, no days off and no complaints either. Today there was not enough time for me to make food, so I ended up calling another store to make me food while I was out on deliveries. I would've had the cook make me a pizza but he's been in a pissy mood all day. I got back. I have a couple slices and then go get ready to take another delivery. While I am packing my bag he comes over and tells me I am not allowed to bring food into the store again and to never let it happen again.
I initially planned on quitting but now I’m trying to see if I can get laid off instead. Has anyone been able to convince their employer to lay them off? Quoting the below article: “Don’t get fired or quit your job. Instead, get laid off. If you quit or get fired, you get no benefits. But if you get laid off, you can receive a severance, unemployment benefits, subsidized health insurance […]” https://www.financialsamurai.com/dont-get-fired-or-quit-get-laid-off-instead/ Edit 1: been working in corporate America for the same company for 7 years.
So I only just found this place and thought I'd share what was the last straw at my last job. Technically I didn't leave because of this incident as I was due to leave for uni anyway, it just made me leave a week early. For context, I worked as part of a catering team in a nature reserve. The area I worked in was inside the indoor play area for the kids. There was usually only one or two of us in there running two tills, making drinks, getting a couple of bits of food and cleaning the seating area. Another thing to note is I am self-declared disabled ie, I say I'm disabled on my paperwork just in case. One of the issues I struggle with is a constant tremor due to fast heart rate so when I'm busy and rushing around, it gets worse. This day there…
I don’t feel alive anymore.
My childhood seems like a distant dream. I had the closest of friends in school and now we've all grown apart. We used to do everything together: classes, sports, holidays, jobs, trips, court, funerals and so much more. Now I'm 26 and I can't seem to make genuine connections with anyone the way I did with those friends. People's careers always take precedence. You always say you'll link back up but it will never happen. The few friends I have now are a shadow of what I once had. Acquaintances seems like a more appropriate term. Life seems like it's moving so fast now, but it was only yesterday that all I had to worry about was what my plans were for the next weekend. Why is it that our culture encourages us to move away after high school/college and let the friendships that you developed for so long wither…
