Jobs with freedom?

Right now I work at a 9-5 job that I hate. I will soon quit so I'm looking for jobs with less than 40 hours per week and/or freedom in terms of how you manage your time. I know this depends on the company you're working for but I'd be interested to hear your experience with jobs that allowed for more freedom. I hope to be self-employed in some way at some point in my life as I think that is the work with the most freedom but until then I need to work for someone else. So I'm looking for a job that enables me to have enough time and energy to work on a side-hustle that could eventually turn into my main source of income. What kind of job do you have that offers you freedom?

New Nametage

I was given a desk at work about a month ago. Today my coworker gave me a Nametage for the desk. It's a post-it note.

I got written up for something I couldn’t see coming.

I got written up for missing a shift. That seems pretty cut and dry, “You didn't show, so you get a write up.” Problem is, They changed my shift time without warning. Typically, I work 5-Close (11 PM or so.) We have an app that tells us when we are supposed to come in. I glanced over it, saw the 5-X of today and just assumed it was business as usual. I was getting ready for work on Friday, when I get a call. Manager basically tells me that I was supposed to be there at 9:30 AM. With very few exceptions, I've never worked anything that isn't 5-X. The earliest I've worked in a day is 1 PM. I wasn't even awake until 11 or so. (I'm a night owl.) When they hired me, I told them I needed consistency with my shifts, and I thought everything was fine.…

Bosses making your job harder?

Maybe this isn’t the best subreddit to ask this in, but what are examples of ways your bosses make your life harder and what do you do about it? I have 3 bosses I work with, but I only directly report to 1. The 1 I report to is legit busy, and it’s hard for her to meet deadline sometimes. The other 2, I’m not so sure. What I do know is that I have more responsibility than them and I am definitely in more meetings than them, and when I’m in meetings I contribute more and I’m more prepared. Should I start documenting this and go to HR? Do I just find another job? Some examples of my struggle are below: Sending them an item for review and them sending it back with typos. Asking them to contribute to a “group project” and they have typos, formatting issues, don’t…

Am I complaining about someone’s dream job?

I work for a small tech startup, making training simulations. I've been with this company for nearly two years and I feel like it's eating me alive. I get 80 hours of PTO, 80 hours of sick leave, 40 hours of personal time off, and 10 holidays a year. I also have half days on Fridays. I work from home so there's no commute time and no need to buy gasoline. I know a lot of people would kill for this job, but I feel like I'm dying. I'm too tired after work to do anything. I feel like I'm getting dumber because all my brain power is dedicated to work. My hobbies have fallen by the wayside. My knees and back have a hard time with all the standing/sitting in the same spot, and I've had to go to physical therapy to try and mitigate the pain. My eyes…

Asking for YOUR Advice

So I work in an office environment that moved to work-from-home (WFH) when Covid happened. We have three offices in my area, and one of them was recently permanently closed due to structural issues, so they’re looking to move to a permanent WFH situation. Unlike many, I hate the WFH arrangement, but I may be being backed into a corner. At this point, they are asking us to provide a list of everything we would need to replicate our cubicle environment, and I am looking to basically ask for so much, it makes the arrangement untenable for them (for instance: an extra 1.5k/mo to buy a bigger home with an office, as my current home only has 2 bedrooms). My question is, if you were given this opportunity (whether you like WFH or not), what would you ask for? Here is my current list: Large, adjustable L-desk. PC or similar…

I need some advice on this whole non-compete BS.

So when I was applying for my current job, I signed a non-compete agreement to where I’m supposedly not allowed to work in a facility with any of the same services that we provide within a 10 mile radius for 1 whole year. Recently I applied for a business that is essentially in the same line of business as us, but with a medical facility attached to it, and it’s 4 miles down the road from my current employer. They have a very specific position there that I’d like to make a career of. I’m in the state of VA, so I’m not sure if anyone knows any ways to break a non-compete, but I feel like I’m stuck and unable to advance or pursue the career path that I want because of this damn document.
