I volunteered to pick up an extra partial shift at work tonight, 8 hours instead of a full 12. Because they had a bunch of open slots and we'll I could use the money. I get called tonight and get told I'm going on standby and they will let me know if they need me. $1 an hour, that's the standby rate. They don't give the option to just have my night back and not work at all. So I'm stuck not able to enjoy my night and they give an insulting amount of cash to be able to force you to come in. I have 60 minutes from getting the call to clock in. I need 10 minutes to dress and 10 minutes to drive in. So I just need to figure out what to do for 39 minutes to kill time I guess.
I recently applied to a marketing company looking for several senior developers. Compensation is great, benefits are great, it is all WFH. I did the exams, passed the interviews, and made it to the final interview with the boss. She is in her late 40s or early 50s (I couldn't tell). I was almost ready to accept this job until she said: “Sometimes I will yell when things are not getting done. Are you able to handle that?” She also added that she wouldn't yell at a specific person but would often do it to the whole team. Idk about you guys but this is a red flag for me. 20 year old me as a fresh graduate would probably say yes because I'd be desperate for a job. But after a few years of experience, handling terrible clients, terrible co-workers, and bosses. I don't think I have to put…
Pretty much the title – my company is giving me a performance bonus (we had no appraisals last year, we got end of year bonus instead) which has a clause that says that if I leave within 12 months I would need to return the bonus in full. For example if they give me a bonus of 30 rupees, dollars, whatever, I'd get (30 minus tax) in reality, but if I quit I'd need to pay them back full 30. I was planning on sticking around anyway, but now that this has happened, I don't want to. Can I refuse this bonus? What's the best strategy to deal with this situation? I'm in India, if that helps.
lowball offer to stay
I worked at an eyewear company for about 5 years. I started at the bottom and worked my way up a bit. After a couple of years I knew how to run the whole department. I would train new employees and lead team members during audits and whatnot. I was crossed trained and jumped in to help wherever help was needed. after 5 years, I decided to look for new employment. Finally I went to turn in my two week notice when I got a new job. I knew my boss was going to have an offer for me to try to get me to stay but I wasn't expecting what he told me. He asked me how much I was being offered at my new job, and I told him it was over a 3 dollar increase per hour. He told me they were not willing to match that.…
Unemployed
Not sure if it's ironic or meta that I'm posting in anti-work while unemployed. Currently looking for entry level factory/warehouse work because I lost my career to sleep apnea and me being unable to adapt to the treatment. I have 30+ unsolicited offers for a career that I can no longer legally participate in. Not one single reply from the entry-level gigs I've applied to or requested more info on. My last two jobs were industry-adjacent. I'm a former truck driver and last two jobs were spotting trailers on company property. Significantly less pay for more work. Quit each of them because they knew I was bent over a barrel and tried to work me like a dog. One was 11 hour days 5 days a week. They actually called Saturdays a “half-day” despite being 6 hours. 61 hours a week at $16/hour for skilled labor. The next job took…
After months of being unemployed and searching, I finally got a call from a construction company that I can start immediately! Unfortunately, a few days ago my water pump went out in my car and have no way to commute the 40 minutes to the job due to living in a very rural area of Florida. Sometimes the deck just gets stacked way too high. Can’t win for losing. Truly ready to just stop existing at this point.
Dont answer demographic questions, ever.
It goes without saying this post is for American job seekers: but if you're checking anything other than white & male just don't even bother answering those questions. In fact If you're a white male and you're answering those questions, you should stop immediately to help fight against hiring discrimination. See why below ⬇️ I was in an interview today and a panelist revealed to me that they choose NOT to look at demographic info when screening applicants. For context, i asked the question of how they personally combat bias in their lives and this was someone's response. I personally stopped checking the boxes a while ago and it's only slightly improved my chances of getting to the interview stage. But the fact that I've noticed the difference is really sad. Anyone else recently stopped answering the questions and noticed the difference?
