HR threatening to take action against me for insubordination unless I dye my hair, as requested by my boss.

Someone suggested I post this here from the two chromosomes sub. I'm 30 and my hair is starting to turn grey. Boss told me to dye it because I have to maintain my hygiene and look professional I'm 30 and suddenly last summer my hair started to turn white very rapidly. I have long black hair and it's very noticeable. It's like in the span of two months a third of my hair suddenly turned white. It does not bother me in the slightest and I never wanted to cover it with dye because I actually like it. My boss is one of those people who inherited a company and only shows up at our workplace a few times a year (usually to take Instagram pics to show off and post “inspiring” BS about being “self-made”) so I had not seen him since early 2021. The two other times he…

Captive audience meetings are not that bad. Hear me out

It cost money for employers to take you away from your job and have you go through those meetings. So why not try to maximize your time in that meeting to maximize the cost to the company. You can do this by asking a lots of questions during the meeting. The question don't even have to reveal that you are pro union. You can ask one of senario question that really don't add any value but take a lot of time.

Is this a Free market economy?

It seems many confuse a free market economy with the cronyism we have been saddled with since the end of WWII. The USA did not figure out the problems that led to the great depression, instead, we used WWII as a catapult to begin a debt based economy, which is now on the verge of sinking. There are of course many factors that at play. I am interested, who here has actually experienced or been part of “free market” and then worked here. Notice any differences?

“Are you exceeding or just doing really well?”

Long time reader, first time caller here. I'm sorry if the below seems to me more of a rant than any questions but I feel it fits this sub perfectly. The company I work for are In the midst of annual review BS and I had a meeting with my People Manager (Which is what the company have recently renamed Line Managers to make them seem more approachable) to make sure we were on the same page on things I think I've 'exceeded expectations' at to which their response  was “Are you exceeding or just doing really well?” To me that's the same thing, there's a category for Outstanding which I would never put unless I was nominated for like am award for excellence in work. They said “I've been really proud of you this year” so I'm obviously doing better than 'achieving' which is turning up and doing the…

Chatty Cathy is a nuisance and I’m tired of it. Anyone else with this pet peeve?

Anyone else have a pet peeve of customers wanting to hang out and talk to you? I'm not talking the regulars who are kind and ask how your days been, or idle chat about the weather waiting for their stuff to me made/rung through. I'm talking the ones who want to tell you their whole life! I just want to go to work, do my job and go home, I'm not looking to make friends with someone over the purchase of a chocolate bar or energy drink. These customers will tell you how they are probably regulars but you've never seen them before, and everything from embarrassing stories you never wanted to hear to the dumbest of shit again you don't have time to hear. It just drives me insane. Is it Jeff Dunham that says “welcome to walmart, get your shit and get out”. I feel like I embody…

I’m a business major. Here’s an excerpt from one of my textbooks on giving “awards” over pay incentives

“Some companies manage to create effective incentive systems on a small budget while downplaying the importance of large bonuses. It is possible to motivate employees through awards, plaques, or other symbolic methods of recognition to the degree these methods convey sincere appreciation for employee contributions. For example, Yum! Brands Inc., the parent company of brands such as KFC and Pizza Hut, recognizes employees who go above and beyond job expectations through creative awards such as the seat belt award (a seat belt on a plaque), symbolizing the roller-coaster-like, fast-moving nature of the industry. Other awards include things such as a plush toy shaped like a jalapeño pepper. Hewlett Packard Development Company LP has the golden banana award, which came about when a manager wanted to reward an employee who solved an important problem on the spot and handed him a banana lying around the office. Later, the golden banana award…

Short notice shit

So I got a text yesterday afternoon that today there is a staff meeting and I have to be there because it's “mandatory” , the text they sent me made me feel like I was 7 years old. But anyway that is very short notice, how can they expect me to show up for a mandatory staff meeting with 1 days notice. Also I'm not scheduled to work tomorrow, I'm only part time and I only work weekends so tomorrow being Thursday I'm always off on Thursday's.
