In praise of idleness – A must read for those who preach a hard work

Part of this great artwork by Russell Like most of my generation, I was brought up on the saying: “Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do.” Being a highly virtuous child, I believed all that I was told, and acquired a conscience which has kept me working hard down to the present moment. But although my conscience has controlled my actions, my opinions have undergone a revolution. I think that there is far too much work done in the world, that immense harm is caused by the belief that work is virtuous, and that what needs to be preached in modern industrial countries is quite different from what always has been preached. Everyone knows the story of the traveler in Naples who saw twelve beggars lying in the sun (it was before the days of Mussolini), and offered a lira to the laziest of them. Eleven of…

any grubhub workers here?

TLDR is it easy to get shifts in other cities on the fly? I'm 25. I've had this dream, or whatever you want to call it, since I was like 16 or 17 of living out of my car. Driving wherever I want across the US. Living in walmart parking lots. IDK gypsy BS. Currently on the waitlist for grubhub. I did some research and from what I've gathered I can just roll up to whatever zip code and start delivering if I'm already “hired”. Wanted to get some absolute verification before I take this big of a step in my life. I'm a minimalist. Give me a decent car that can last a while (i got one), a laptop to do my writing (my passion), and a thin roll up mattress, and my phone, and im good. Idk writing this all drunk. (DISCLAIMER IM WORKING ON MY ALCOHOLISM AND…

Mueller Reports is a scam to prey on employees.

So I had an interview today with mueller reports to be a property inspector. It seemed like a pretty straight forward position with on the job training so I applied and got to the interview. The guy said I’d make 17 dollars plus 40 cents per mile for mileage reimbursement with bonuses in the future. Seemed just a little too good to be true so I talked to my mom about it and she agreed and after a little research it seems to be a big scam to get your personal info and fire you as soon as possible. Told myself I wouldn’t get my hopes up about this one, now here I am again, hating myself for getting a little excited. Unemployed for 15 days tomorrow.

There are a few restaurant managers who don’t suck!!

In 06' I took an “extended unpaid vacation” to travel Europe with friends. It was 4 weeks. This franchise rib joint I was at was swirling the bowl. Found out somewhere in Rome, I think… it closed. I was officially unemployed. YAY? Oh no! My $2:13/hour. Like 2 weeks after returning my old manager shows up with a check! Here is your vacation pay! Which I didn't expect or qualify for because I was just barely under the “vacation” line of 32 hours. It wasn't a lot, but damn!! And it was my tipped pay! He was losing his job too and took the time to sneak on some extra pay/literally an hour for me, cause F them. I'll never work for that company again but that guy gets it and my thanks. TL:DR Manager flubbed the numbers (slightly) so I got vacation pay when the restaurant closed while on…

In-N-Out is no where near as progressive as you think

So I recently saw a post praising In-N-Out Burger for it's “progressive pay” and the prices for the food in this subreddit. This post will come off as extremely ranty as I get so worked up about this company, so I apologize for any spelling errors. I've worked for INO for over 7 years and its nowhere near as great as you think it is. The pay is always just enough to work their instead of McDonalds, BK, Carl and other fast-food locations and its almost always impossible to make it to fulltime unless you're a higher level and desire to make it into management. The more fulltimers at a store the less money the Store manager makes from their paychecks incentivizing them to keep the number low. The culture is extremely toxic and almost runs as an “Old Boys Club” only recently have I seen the culture slowly allow…

The Online Anti-Work Community Is Bigger Than What Many May Imagine.

Just an observation. I’ve noticed that Facebook and Twitter posts (at least the ones shown to me by the almighty algorithms) don’t have as many interactions and likes as most of the posts from r/antiwork. Mainstream, corporate-financed media is definitely blacking out and ignoring much of the labor movement, regardless of political inclinations. I’m curious if their Nielsen ratings are as underwhelming? We should continue proselytizing the gospel of the proletariat, and deprogram the masses.

Naming and shaming IS always a good idea, actually.

The mods having their bot try to discourage us from naming and shaming every single time somebody acknowledges one of the few tools we actually have for fighting back against exploitation has gone on long enough. To name and shame a company is one of the only tools we even HAVE in order to defend ourselves against this shit and we have a moral obligation to name and shame every single company that chooses to exploit us.
