It has personally made me re evaluate my previous passions and career choices but more importantly it's brought to light, more than ever, how monotonous it is just to get through SURVIVING a month rather than truly LIVING What is everyone's personal story or opinions since COVID?
So obligatory throwaway. I work in software support. We deliver software to about 1 million companies around Scandinavia and we’re currently leading the market. I am the one in my department that probably knows everything that is going on within the company and the software we provide, and I am way out-skilled for what I do. Lately we have hired 10-15 developers but not enough testers. This means publishing of new updates and bug fixes are on hold. 3 of our testers also went on 6 month leave for various reasons (paternal leave?) so we are left with only 1 tester. As this job is not something you can learn through education, becoming a tester can take up to 2-3 years depending on how fast you learn. Developer department leaders have therefore been asking me to step in to help testing the bug fixes before it is pushed to production.…
…You incompetent piece of shit”
well, i did it. i quit.
i worked as a kennel staff member at a vet hospital. it sucked. this hospital didn’t have a janitorial staff, if that’s common i have no clue. i was HOPING to get into the vet world. however, being janitorial staff on top of my expected job requirements, for $12/hr, is not worth it. kennel was horribly understaffed my entire time i worked there. i was frequently required to cover shifts alone, which would make me stay late because it’s really a 2-3 person job. before getting hired i was not informed i would have to deal with dead bodies. i believe that was on purpose. i realized, after bagging bodies for 30 minutes, “damn. i just did that for $6” and i was so embarrassed. i was constantly talked down to, not only by other coworkers but by my boss as well. my coworkers treated me like garbage. it got…
I am beyond pissed. I have been looking for a job for about a month, finally interviewed for a 7-3 job with ok pay, I specifically mentioned in the interview I was happy the location was 4 minutes from my house as I could use my 30 minute lunch break to go home and take my dogs out so they didn’t have to be crated 8 hours straight. The manager laughed and agreed with me. I got a second interview, and they reached back out with an offer but changed the shift to the evening shift. Reluctantly I agreed to it after I got them to give me specific days off. Then they switched me to 3 morning shifts and 2 evening shifts. Fine whatever I got there today for my first day of training and the topic of lunch or something came up again and I mentioned the exact…
As President’s Day occurs it reminds me of how few people really get these holidays. For those in the executive suites, they get time off, those in blue collar labor, it’s just another day.
My Boss on 9/11
The company dinner post reminds me of one that happened to me. This was just over 20 years ago. On 9/11/2001 as a matter of fact. Fortune 50 Company back then. My group of about 20 people (white collar, cube-farm office) was on a field day out of the office for a “team-building day”. Or boss gave us the address to gather at the business of friend of his to “volunteer” to do exterior painting for him. At the beginning of the day he tossed out t-shirts to all of us with his friend’s business name on them, because “we didn’t want to get paint on or own clothes, did we?” 9/11 happened that morning. Our boss was in and out of his buddy's office watching the news, and told us vaguely that something was happening in New York with plane crashes, but he had us keep painting until close…
Get ready for the wall of text Comrades. Gonna try to give some context on my employment and history with this company first before diving into today’s lesson! Long time lurker and labor rights activist reporting in. Gonna try to be neat and thorough here without leaving much out, though I likely will have to due to the length of my employment with this company. I work for a grocery chain in California, it’s unionized but it is a business union whose interests tend to align with management’s, and today I was suspended again. I’m also a college student studying Political Science and Labor Studies. I’ve been employed at this specific store for over 3 years now, since before the pandemic started, and I have been an ardent unionist and leftist for quiet awhile now. Telling people about their rights and how to stand up for themselves is something I’m…
