I don’t even need to be at the office to do my job. I feel like managers learned nothing over the pandemic.
I mystery shop chain coffee shops in the UK. I don’t get paid but I get the food for free. I do it on my lunch break and complete the 20 min report on my train ride home. I am required to pretend to have an allergy and measure how seriously staff treat it. I am always honest about this and note down any instances where the wrong milk for example is served. The rest of it, such as customer service I give them all glowing reviews. The idea that a overworked underpaid barista should be giving me welcoming and friendly comments with a smile on their face is patronising and insulting. 5 stars across the board.
These past couple of weeks have been crazy. This is an update to this post where I detailed how I got a stellar review and asked for more money and was met with a raise that wasn't even close to what I asked for and still 60k below market. Let's walk through the journey of what went down. I ended up putting in my notice a couple of weeks ago with someone in executive leadership who I value a lot. We had a long conversation about the company, my goals, the comp situation, my family, and just about everything under the sun that led to this decision. I did a lot of things for his team and he asked if there was anything they could do to keep me. I told him that I had already accepted an offer that would be paying me 100% more and his response was…
My boss assaulted me last night
I work as a restaurant server. There has been some confusion about our checks and some of them were suspiciously low. Over the past several weeks my coworkers and I have been seeking an explanation of how our tips are calculated with no answer from management. Yesterday, two servers went in to open the restaurant, they got everything ready, and then were sat down by the owner. They were given a piece of paper with a bunch of numbers on it. Told this is how tip-out works and also you're fired. When I heard about this, I texted the boss and told her I was walking out until she apologized and offered their jobs back. I got no response. One of the other servers also walked out after me. Later that evening we get a text from one of the lower managers that we can come pick up our checks.…
Total War is a term that means, all members of society have to contribute to a war effort. In the name of winning a war in other lands, the citizenry of the home front will accept all sorts of changes to their life which they normally wouldn't. Including longer work weeks, fuel rationing, increased regulation on media, higher taxes and big brother surveillance measures. Your school didn't teach you that WW2 caused income taxes to go from being enforced on the wealthiest to being enforced on all people in the name of winning the war and they never went away after the war ended. At least not for commoners. The labor movement of the 1920s created a labor practice that discouraged pace setting. Tell a worker he isn't working fast enough, you get your ass kicked later. In WW2 workers had to step up production for the war. Military police…
Is this normal or nepotism?
For background: I am a neurodiverse female who works in tech. I have been in my role/company for 11 months. I work hard and I am constantly verbally praised for my work. My company just got approval for this year’s budget. My boss has been bragging about how well our company did last year, so the budget is significantly bigger. With that, we will be adding a new person to our team. My boss has already talked to a friend about the role, and has ‘trained him’ by showing how to do the job and showing him our software. Recently, I was told by my boss that I would not receive a promotion until I train his friend, who will make more money than me upon being hired because “he already knows how to do the job” (aka my boss showed him these things). I am in a junior level…
