Gone Full Circle

Be me. Can't get a job in college so I start my own freelance. Get small gigs but good enough. Built a portfolio. Graduate, but can't get a decent job because I don't have the experience. Take what I can get, all jobs I hate with toxic work environments, but I need the money. 12 years later, I have an outstanding portfolio as a writer and content manager. Not happy with current pay, so I start looking again. Every single job I apply to passes on me for people who are “more qualified”, read as “asked for less pay”. The jobs I do get interviewed for are for industries and products that are very new – last interview was for the metaverse and Facebook/meta. This literally just started. Got turned down because they want someone with at least 3 years of experience with an industry that was born yesterday. This…

HR took PTO from me for workman’s comp related doctor visits

I effed up my knee pretty bad at work over a month ago. Ignored it for awhile then ended up going through workman’s comp to see an ortho. 3 different visits over a couple of weeks and got 4.5 hours of PTO taken from for each visit. Does anyone know if they can do that?

Work trying to steal time. Not on my watch.

Strap in folks, this is a long one. Used to work in a nursing home, in Scotland, as a nightshift carer. Shifts were 8pm to 8am. After a mess up, nurses were being paid to come in at 7.45 (only 15 minutes before major shift change, same in the morning as night) to receive a hand over about the clients, medication checks etc. About a week after this was implemented management told carers they had to come in 15 minutes early. We asked if we were getting paid. We were told it was a trial. Most staff worked four shifts a week, so management were getting an extra free hour from us. No extra time for breaks were going to be given. We couldn't leave early if the handover was done and the next shift was there. As we didn't get paid, I called ACAS (government advisory service about working…

Everyone’s over remote work except for the workers themselves. “It’s time to get back to work,” NYC Mayor Eric Adams said in February. “You can’t stay home in your pajamas all day—that’s not who we are as a city. You need to be out, cross-pollinating ideas, interacting with humans.”

I think I just lost my job

I work in retail as your typical cashier, I was scheduled to work today, but found out my dog had a sudden severe decline and needed to be put down. My job expected me to come in and miss out on saying goodbye to him. My managers reason? It's too short of notice. That manager also brags regularly about us being fully staffed, yet somehow not a single damn one of my coworkers could cover me. I just told my managers to figure it out or consider it my notice. I know it was the right thing to do, but I'll be damned if it doesn't hurt to leave coworkers I genuinely enjoy working with, and for decent pay. Fuck anyone who thinks this is normal and acceptable for people to go through.

Job listing says “must have “batteries included”” in their requirements. Wtf?

These job listings are getting so damn weird. The only reason I'm looking is to get out of my current hellhole. But wtf? What is that even supposed to mean? Just say what you mean and be transparent… Oh wait, I forgot, employers don't know how to do that. The company was something called “Elite Practice” so I'm truly not surprised. Also read one where the #1 requirement was “emotional stability”. Forget what the place was called but I'm pretty sure it was a food related job… If your #1 requirement is emotional stability, you are the problem, not your employees! Just baffled by some of the shit I've been seeing…
