I work at a popular breakfast chain restaurant and I recently fell ill with a horrible stomach bug. My roommate also caught this bug, but she has insurance and was able to get a note(we work at the same place) our boss STILL will not schedule me until I come in with a doctors note. I can’t afford the medical bills, much less if I’m being refused hours..the restaurant should have to foot them if they’re requiring a note?

Avocado toast? Really?
I left the US in 2009 and I’m never going back because fuck no, but the whole “avocado toast” thing really drove home to me how bad things have gotten. When I was growing up, the luxury foods we talked about were things like caviar, and lobster, and massive T-bone steaks. Now it’s a piece of fruit and a slice of bread? That just boggles my mind, the transition of luxury to such a simple meal. Just a piece of fruit and a slice of bread, that’s too wasteful for the generation after mine to expect.
My shitty bosses
I’ve been working in the restaurant business this summer for some extra cash and my boss is legitimately terrible. Some days the place was well over 100 degrees F with two ovens turned on both underneath and above me. The AC was barely working and they didn’t give a shit. My other boss has body shamed me to other people as well as regular shit-talking (and I’m pretty sure she outed one of my coworkers too). On one particularly hot day two of the people nearly fainted and after miraculously getting permission they closed the place early. One of my coworkers threw up all night and went to the health center and was told she had heatstroke. When she called in sick from work our boss yelled at her over the phone and said that this job maybe wasn’t right for her. SHE IS 16. Our boss also yelled at…

Birth of the Slacker | Generation X
I worked for a small local wholesaler, a family run business, boss was 60 the director, his wife a director, son ran the internet side of the business. Not long after starting there i noticed when things were busy and the Dad got cranky his son would say “don't worry about him, he gets like that”. I'd told him i wasn't worried and just got on with my work. This would escalate into whenever i asked the boss a question he'd respond with a look of puzzlement on his face and give a hostile answer, he'd also barge in when i was busy processing orders and demand to know why a guys post code was on an order despite him being in Ireland where they don't use codes (the website wouldn't allow the field to be empty) blaming me for him paying less than he should for shipping (he didn't).…
live above means
A family member who takes care of me works at a restaurant about two days a week. They do this because they already have another full-time job, and this restaurant job is to help pay the bills and help us buy groceries. They've been working this job for about a year. They recently got told that the starting wage was being raised to $12.50 an hour from $11. $11 was the starting wage from when they started last year. The day came around when everyone was getting a raise and they only got a 10 cent raise. They only found out by talking to other co-workers that they make the least amount of money, even though they have been working there for the longest. Even the indeed listing says the minimum is $12. I want to help them in any way possible, but I don't know what to do. I've…
