I'm looking for answers and to be educated. If you'd like to read what I have to say and try to help me by giving me information or sources where I can find it, I will be eternally grateful. I am willing to dedicate my life to workers rights and human rights after my life experiences. I'm trying to figure out what that looks like here. In my adult life I've worked in the trades and served in the Infantry. I'm from a small town in Virginia and have grown my entire life with conservative views on everything. I decided to spend a couple years abroad and looking at things from the outside the US really made me have a lot of questions and realize we can do better than what we have now. I've always made good money working in the trades. I've always worked hard, come home dirty,…
Hi all, this isn’t really an anti-work post but it’s definitely an “anti sleazy work ethics” post – and I guess I’m being scammed out of deserved money. So, I’m a freelancer who works on projects for companies. I get brought into companies as a temp employee to work on week long projects. This time, I was onboarded into a company for a 5 day project. They asked me what my day rate was, and I said it was X per day. I received a contract from HR with my day rate converted into hourly. This amount, if multiplied by 8 hours, made my day rate. So, usual working hours there. It also stated what my overtime pay was. So I assumed they wanted me to work 8 hours. No issue there. I worked the first three days for the company and for each day put in 8 hours in…
I’ve been thinking about leaving my company for a long time now, because I’m doing an unnecessary commute that wasn’t outlined in my offer letter. In addition to that, my manager for whatever reason does not like me. I have known this since the beginning and I can’t quite figure out why because I have put in 100% effort to this job since I started. I love the company, but she is the only roadblock holding me back which is really disappointing. But aside that fact, this past week, I was blindsided by being placed on a PIP initiated by her after having received no write ups for coaching’s at all whatsoever since I started at the company. The only other thing she outlined during my last review was to improve accuracy. I even got a raise! This just seems completely unwarranted and I know that her sector of the…
Old Bitter Office Bullies
Okay guys, I have had all kinds of jobs from customer service, to office, food service. WTF is going on with the older generation bullying the younger generation in the office? This was a new experience for me but some of the common features I and others I spoke to noticed were as follows…. Leaving newcomers out of important information, keeping track of their break times, lunches and arrivals. Pointing out little mistakes and tagging other office people and superiors in the “targets” email. Accusing new office “target” of sleeping their way to the top or into a position. Sabotaging their work on a shared office drive. WTF?! What are your stories or tips or advice to a newcomer to an office enviornment?
Here's a scenario. Z and J are in business together, but Z controls and finances most of it, and is basically J's employer. Z is good at what he does. It is successful business and opens up many opportunities to J. It is also one of the only jobs J could ever find that would work with their disability, preferred career path, and general ethics (as far as the job itself). It is also quite a lucrative job for the amount of time required (J has to work many small jobs to make a living). In most of the public's perception, J works WITH Z, not FOR Z. (This sounds weird but it's apparently normal in the industry I am describing.) J needs money to support their sick family member. J will also gain many opportunities from staying with Z for a while, in an unforgiving and luck based industry.…
Zoinks Scoob
My wife's looking to get back into the workforce after a number of years at home while our kids were young. She's got good skills, but hasn't been in a corporate environment in quite awhile. I'm on LinkedIn, looking for roles which might work for her. I have some search terms, have set some other criteria, including that the role is “full time” and “Entry level”. I get some interesting results, start reading job descriptions, and almost all of them want 5+ years, or more, of experience! I just want to say to companies who do this, fuck you very much. Such a waste of everyone's time.
