I fucking hate retail
For context, I work at an independent liquor chain in Kentucky. The owners are really cool people, but they don't adjust our pay despite inflation or how well the stores do. They go on a lot of vacations with store profits, while the rest of us are paycheck to paycheck making 11 – $12/hr. I could forgive all of that, especially since I'm at this job to learn so I can start homebrewing and eventually brewing my own beer commercially, but management is the fucking worst. My manager, who has been here for 9 years, will make any effort possible to make excuses for the employees she likes, no matter how dogshit their work ethic is. Meanwhile, me being the new guy (been here 4 months) and one of maybe half a dozen men across the whole chain, I am expected to work my everloving ass off at all times…
My wife has worked at Olive Garden for the past few months. It's been a shit-show, chronically short-staffed and undersupplied. In our state, employers are required to enroll employees in a health insurance plan after 4 consecutive weeks of 20+ hrs worked. She started right about June 1. Come July, no word on insurance. She had to pester management multiple times to get any info from them, noting that she needs access to medical care and has had to cancel multiple appointments. They say she's “eligible in August” despite the law saying she has to be enrolled after 4 weeks. So yesterday she starts feeling ill partway through her shift. A coworker offers to take her tables, so my wife asks management if she can go home. Manager says no and makes her finish it her tables, saying that O.G. doesn't have to do anything for medical accommodation because there's…
New way to control working schedule
Since I've been working here we have used a finger print punch system. Starting in August the only way for us to clock in will be to use an app. They require us to have a smartphone and the app uses our location data to decide whether or not we can clock in. I've asked multiple times to different management whether or not the app will/can track our location in the background and no one has given me a straight answer. The app in question is HCMtoGo. Does anyone here have any experience with a system like this? How much data are they gonna be scraping from me? Will they be able to check whether I'm at the doctors if I call out sick? I really dont like the idea of my employer being able to check my location. But I do need to continue to be employed.
