Getting Fired Sucks

I worked as a correctional officer in a direct supervision facility for 4+ years with no major Incidents. I’ve always carried a pocket knife on me just for the eventuality you’re going to find someone who’s attempting to self-asphyxiate themselves. It happens in high-stress environments such as jails. I left that job earlier this year to move to a new facility where it’s intermittent supervision so basically, the inmates are all behind bars. In a direct supervision facility, the inmates are all around the officer with no real barriers. So at this new facility, the Sgt sees I have a pocket knife on my person and runs to the boss who terminates me on the spot. Am I wrong to be hurt by this or should I try and appeal this termination?

It took me 30 years of work and a successful career to raise my income only by $10k, in “when I started my career” dollars!

When my daughter was small and still practicing using silverware at breakfast diners with me, I managed a small software store. I was a broke single parent. 30 years later, I have built a career in on of the preeminent modern technology skill trees, becoming a tenured senior software architect with plenty of deployment and server administration masteries and plenty of what are called “full-stack” high-level side skills. I am currently not under-salaried nor under-employed. In “daughter was small” early 90's dollars– it took me 30 years and decades of hard-earned excellence in a software (architecture) career, to raise my effective salary by only $10,000 over being the store manager of a small retail shop with no previous experience. In the dollars of that time. That explains a lot, whoosh! : ) I have realized I was still thinking of the employment and income world as approximately the same, in…

If you guys could change one thing about employment rules what would it be?

For me it would be capping the earnings of the highest earners to a factor of those of the lowest earners for all companies.

Job references should require employers to be reviewed first…

Like I have had a particularly bad string of employment. Started with my health tanking in March 2020 and losing my job of 3 years in 2021 because of mental health issues. Owed like 20k in rent from missed work. I got desperate and worked for whoever. Now my work references are those same shitty places. Know for a fact they'll lie about me because I went HR about safety. Because I reported associates trying to fist fight with me on the job. I look bad because I quit and got out. Even got laid off for calling out sick once, but my ex employer will somehow twist that on me too… If the turnover rates of these companies was revealed it'd make sense that i quit or was fired for stupid shit

old employer is withholding last paycheck

i gave my two week notice and my last day was MAY 26th. on the 20th of june, i noticed i hadn’t received my last paycheck, so i texted her. she didn’t respond until a few days later when i texted her about a separate matter, and said she would look into it. haven’t heard about it since then, so i texted her again today- no response. we got paid over venmo so i can see her transactions and i know she’s been paying her employees. we left things on fine terms, i have no idea why she’s refusing to pay me for my last couple weeks of work. i have horrible social anxiety and just texting her is hard enough, i have no idea how i’m going to make it through any potential legal proceedings.

What are the most useless jobs in your opinion? Which jobs would vanish if we had a UBI?

My opinion is that many jobs in marketing and HR are really useless and are mostly concerned with producing/selling more stuff and emplying more people to do so just so that the people working there don't starve, because capitalism I guess. Lots of jobs I see in the programming sector are about HR or optimizing ad performance, SEO and collecting and analyzing data to show even “better ads”. If we had a basic income nobody would have to produce stuff just for the sake of selling it. It would become easier just to produce the things that are really needed, do the things that you really want, you wouldn't have to be profitable or necessarily better than others in certain ways. Also, there are still many (partly even subsidised) jobs that are hurting the planet. Producing and selling coal, cars, meat and weapons could all go away in favor of…

I have to go back to work today.

I work in the automotive industry and my factory has been on layoff the last few months and oh my I loved it. Not being tired, having all my freedom; and today I feel it all fleeting away. My only hopes are rumours that we might be laid off again after this week. I hate working every day just to be able to barely afford the necessity’s of life. I make only slightly less on unemployment and I don’t have any of the stress of listening to 4 bosses complain at me, the constant harassment to work 13 1/2 hours every day. I was so happy for a minute there, and today as I get dressed and ready to stand on my feet for 8 hours; I feel the sadness that is my 40 hour work week sucking the happiness from me.

New job is way harder than advertised and salary is nowhere near what it should be. What do I do?

I got a job working presages for insurance. The training was so terrible, it's difficult to even put into words. 8 weeks of remote training for one aspect of a system as outdated as it is complicated. We're literally working on a Windows 95 style application. They moved on to the next subject before we solidified any information from the previous one, so by the time we got out on the floor we were handholding an already swamped production team. The day to day is WAY OVERCOMPLICATED. So many steps, applications, and people to exchange information with, an infinite amount of tiny things to remember for every line of coverage… it's not a wonder training was a nightmare – there's no way to effectively teach this knotted mess of a system. Fucking nursing school was easier than this! Now that I'm out of training, I'm seeing that this job is…
