Party bullshit

My employer is having this big get together party next month, in the middle of the workday. At a different location. From what I gather, we won’t be paid for our time and will have to make it up somehow if we attend or just leave for the day. I’m hoping I can just hang back and continue to work. Thing is, I don’t even know if that will be an option, and of course I’m expected to sign an rsvp slip without really knowing how this is all supposed to go down. If I don’t go, I’m sure management will see me in a non social/negative light. Oh well. Anyone ever have to deal with this? I swear HR needs to find something else to do.
