Performance Improvement Plan or Quitting (With Compensation)?

I have been told that I'm being put on a performance improvement plan at my current place of work, and was also informed by HR that it's possible it just isn't the right fit and if I choose to depart instead of going through with the PIP, there will be compensation involved. Should I stick it out to make sure I get unemployment benefits or should I find out and take the other compensation package once that is revealed to me?
