I want to briefly share the theory of “performance punishment” for those who aren't familiar with the concept.
If you (or your team) become extremely proficient at your job, you will be punished by being allotted less time in which to do your work, and fewer team members to do it with. You'll find fewer resources allocated. You'll have extra tasks added to your workload. You WILL get a few “You're awesomes” and maybe a pizza party now and again. Hope you like pepperoni! They'll wonder why you're also incredibly bitter.
Conversely, if you aren't efficient and if you can't manage your time, you'll be rewarded. Can't get your work done in the time allotted?–stay late (and on the clock) and get some overtime. You'll be assigned extra team members to pick up the slack, so you'll have even less work to do. You certainly won't be assigned extra tasks, because you are already SO overworked! You will also be lauded as being a shining example of a team player. “Look at Jane–she worked through her lunch break (overtime) AND stayed late. She's such a great employee!! Why can't you all be more like Jane?” Jane also makes more money than you because of all that incidental overtime.
My goal this year is to be Jane.
