I picked up this job as an easy part time gig while going to school. It has turned into a nightmare and I need to rant.
It’s a retirement home, but independent. So we basically only feed people and do light housekeeping. We have plenty of residents who have severe dementia, bowel issues, and physical ailments who need to be in higher care. Management doesn’t want to lose the income from them so instead of moving them into higher care or properly communicating with our local health authority to ensure their needs are met, residents are at constant risk. I mean falling, living in squalor, getting lost, etc.
This is a huge strain on staff who aren’t properly trained or equipped to deal with serious medical issues and biohazards. Staff who have been with the company for a decade get paid .35 more than minimum wage.
At last months staff meeting we were told the company is hemorrhaging too much money to pay us adequately, but we might see a raise on our next pay check. There was no raise. Meanwhile management gets a $2000 bonus for every new move in. Keep in mind our residents are fed on seven dollars a day, basically prison food and the building is in shambles but rent is 2k a month, for over 100 residents. that’s 200k in revenue monthly.
We lost four senior staff members because of this shit this month, management has not hired anyone to replace them.
