Pressured to chip in on managers Christmas “gift”

So I’ve been a part of this thread for a while now and learned a lot of great things. Today I put it to use. I’m a cashier. And I’ve not been there for too long. But a coworker (who is pretty rude, and gets complained on OFTEN) approached me and said “we’re all chipping in on a gift for ____. Would you mind participating?” And I immediately said “no. “ and she gave me a look, as if to say “oh come on” and I said “I don’t have the money.” And she kept looking at me. And I said “would you like to see my bank account?” And she said “no that’s fine. You can just pay me back on payday” and I said “no.

And I said “would you like to see my bank account?”
And she said “no that’s fine. You can just pay me back on payday” and I said “no. Don’t worry about it”
And afterwards I was pretty pissed off.

1, for being pressured into giving a “gift” that I have no idea what it is, or any timely notice whatsoever,

2, because I won’t participate in chipping in on a gift for someone who doesn’t give a crap about me other than to operate her company.

However I am proud of myself for not caving out of guilt or pressure. Had it been a year ago, I would’ve given in.

My manager did get us a gift. A card , and some candy with a scratch off. Pretty weak gift but I mean at least it was something . It’s more than I’ve ever gotten in a workplace ever

That’s all. Thanks for reading !
