Question about break requirements in California

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster, a new employer of mine has just said that ALL breaks during the day must be taken in a designated break area, however, as confusing as it is, CA law seems ro saw I can do whatever I please during a unpaid break and they can’t keep me on the premises, am I right on this line of thinking?
