Want to get a sanity check on whether or not this is odd or normal practice in most companies.
My current department (not sure if company wide) almost never posts jobs considered promotions. They essentially pick who they will promote and then announce it. No one else gets the opportunity to apply for it, we don't even know about the opening until the manager one day announces Person X just got promoted to Position Y. Is this normal? I thought we would at least get the illusion of having a chance for the promotion, but it seems it's all done behind the curtain.
ETA: I work mid-level corporate job at a major company.
