Question about reference laws (MA)

Was talking to a coworker about reference laws and had some confusion. I’ve had employers tell me that they can’t say anything bad in a reference out of fear that they might get sued, although a google search tells me that as long as information given in a reference is related to questions about the work that shouldn’t be a problem. Are there similar laws in place for coworker references? If a coworker gives a negative but factual reference could they get in trouble for it? Google also says that as long as the information pertains go work and is a honestly held opinion, then there isn’t an issue. P.S. I know google isn’t the best source but I’m at work and don’t have a lot of time to do detailed research, thanks in advance!
