Reason for career change deemed “not sufficient”

I recently interviewed for a position that is quite different to my current role. But I have grown to hate my current job. I was encouraged to go for a promotion 2 years ago. I loved my original team, I still do, I chat to them daily. But my new role is not something I had any experience in, and after 2 years it has morphed into areas that I have no interest in whatsoever. The interview I had recently was more administrative than my background, which is more creative, but honestly I am desperate for a change, and I have administrative experience, I’m good at it.

It also allows for a lot more growth- my current role allows for none.

In the interview, they asked why I wanted to move from a creative career path to one that is so different. I explained to them my reasons, that my current role wasn’t giving me the opportunities I wanted and I wanted to utilise my other skills and reach my professional goals, that creativity exists in many forms, etc etc. All true, exactly the reasons I wanted to leave.

The interview lasted an hour, it went really well, even the hiring manager said so at the end. The recruiter called afterwards and said the same. A week later and I had heard nothing. After a week I contacted the recruiter and asked for feedback on the interview. He said “the reason you gave for a career change wasn’t sufficient”.

It was literally the reason I want a career change. And my career path to this point hasn’t been particularly creative. It’s been in creative fields, but my role has always had an administrative/executive type slant. I don’t understand how my reasoning isn’t sufficient, it’s my reasoning and mine alone. So frustrating.
