My father has been working at a home
improvement store for over two decades. He was salaried and his compensation included semi-annual sales bonuses. He finally retired and his last day of work was at the end of last year. He just received a bonus payout for the second half of 2022. This of course was a welcome surprised, but I find it odd that they paid him the bonus. I have never worked retail, but at all my previous employers you did not get the bonus if you were not employed at the time it was paid out. Now, I’m kind of worried it was a mistake. He doesn’t plan to say anything to the employer. But I am wondering if he should sit on the money for a while in case they come asking for it back…my worst fear is that he uses it to pay off his bills and then they figure it out and ask for it back. Does anyone have experience with this? Have you ever received a bonus after leaving the company?
