To start, I discovered this subreddit through a Facebook post about misleading job postings.
I am a manager for a company that has some pretty absurd practices when it comes to recruiting/hiring.
When a job posting is listed, it is done so in a way to achieve “more qualified candidates” than what is actually expected of the job. For example, the owner of the company usually posts a job listing and titles it “Store Manager” even though we are actually looking for Sales Consultants. When I have brought up my concerns about the misleading nature, I have been told “We do it so we get higher quality candidates.” When looking back at how I was recruited, it was the same thing. I had applied for a management role, then told I didn’t meet the requirements of the role (even though I did), and then was offered the role that they were ACTUALLY hiring for. I took the position out of desperation and eventually leapfrogged that management position and took a higher role in the company because I was the only one who wanted to deal with being in such close contact with the owner.
Now that I am in a role where I have to interview candidates, my ethics are being tested because I am having to basically LIE to people and tell them that due to the fact that they are alone in this retail setting many times, the role is actually STORE management and not PEOPLE management while offering them a commission based Sales Consultant role and that is how we get around the “misleading” posting.
Well, this week it came out that MY EXACT JOB was posted online for the company. I asked the owner if I should be worried, his response was “No need to worry. We have found we get higher caliber talent when we post jobs with this title and then we tell them they don’t meet the criteria for the role. They usually are still interested in the position.”
One of my biggest issues is that our company is fairly small and vertical movement is VERY rare. Many of the people I am interviewing are LITERALLY looking for new positions BECAUSE the company they work for have been screwing them over when it comes to upward mobility and career paths.
Due to fear of litigation and generally being unaware of laws and how everything works, I will not disclose any information that may lead to identification of the employer, my official title in the company, or anything else identifiable.
