I work in retail at a grocery store in AZ and am in Union. I’ve been working at my department for about a month and had a discussion with one of my coworkers. We discussed pay and found out that she gets paid less than me and she’s been working here far longer than I have.
After finding that out, I went to ask another coworker how much they are being paid and they are being paid less than her! On top of that, he didn’t have a union rep present when he was hired, and two other people that were hired with him can attest to that as well.
We recently had a guy (or a kid) work here who ended up leaving and before he left, I had asked how much he was getting paid. He was getting paid slightly more than me. Mind you, he has nowhere near the experience I do or any of the others that are getting paid less than him have. All of us have retail experience, yet are getting paid less.
Something tells me this is illegal, but I need more opinions and advice. What do you all think? I really want to be educated on the matter and what steps I can take and what I shouldn’t do.
