References from old job while interviewing?

Hi, I work as a graphic designer and I’ve only had one agency job to date, which I’ve been at for a year and a half. The people are great but the pay is lackluster and I’m not in the field of design I’d prefer to be. Since there doesn’t seem to be too much growth here, I’ve been boosting my portfolio and looking to apply to other internships and jobs but they want references….. is there a good way to talk to my boss and get them as references since this is my only exp but not have them fire me etc? I’m just worried about my new place calling them and then them coming to me when I haven’t told them I’m looking for a job (not that I have to). I have a great relationship with the people and I doubt they’d do anything to spite me.…

I have a great relationship with the people and I doubt they’d do anything to spite me. I also know they’ve treated me well and having someone call them out of the blue would be rude….but it’s my first time doing this and I just wanted advice or to see what other people do when looking to move but needing some references etc.
Thanks!
