Corporate policy specifically states that workers cannot sit down on the job outside break periods and lunches, this includes cashiers who literally stand, mostly stationary, in a 2×2 cube the entire day and handle groceries. I am a cashier and could do 90% of my job while sitting and I guarantee it would be better than being in pain and discomfort almost every single day because of constant pressure on my legs and feet.
The stated reason for this, frankly, evil policy is it makes workers appear more “professional” to the customer. To which customer?
To an asshole who hates minimum wage workers no matter what?
To the housed boomer who sits on a pile of money and thinks nobody wants to work anymore?
To corporate management who have no idea what goes on in their own stores which are running in spite of their rampant mismanagement and greed?
I try to be a courteous cashier and provide good customer service to the people coming through my line, who (thankfully) are largely decent people. But it is harder to do this when a corporate ghoul from on high has declared that the serfs shall not sit.
Let the cashiers sit
