Riveted reward?

From a psychological perspective people are driven by reward? Right? That’s what makes sense is to work hard and acquire a worthy reward. Yet I have noticed that a reward at the end of the day can be compared to the reward at the end of life. Sometimes your so tired from all of the hard work that the reward is not even worth it anymore. It’s basically like having a cake but you cannot eat it because you have crippling diabetes. Anyone else noticing the trend of “it’s okay, it’ll pay off when I retire”?
