Role Change at Work? Confused……

Hi all, I need some advice on my current situation. My background: -26 Years old -Advanced Diploma in Business Admin -Bachelors of Business Admin with specialization in Accounting. – Prior internship experience working as an analyst (1 year) My story: I work for a small/mid sized manufacturing company in a niche market. I was hired back in August by the owner, the terms of the role were a little vague but to generalize I was told I would be across various accounting functions and getting good experience, so I accepted the below market wage at $20/h (Ontario,Canada). Turns out it was just invoicing and billing customers so data entry really. Hi all, I need some advice on my current situation.

My background:

-26 Years old

-Advanced Diploma in Business Admin

-Bachelors of Business Admin with specialization in Accounting.

– Prior internship experience working as an analyst (1 year)

My story: I work for a small/mid sized manufacturing company in a niche market. I was hired back in August by the owner, the terms of the role were a little vague but to generalize I was told I would be across various accounting functions and getting good experience, so I accepted the below market wage at $20/h (Ontario,Canada). Turns out it was just invoicing and billing customers so data entry really. Once I got the hang of the role within a few months I spoke to the owner and asked if there were other areas I could help in. I ended up tracking and analyzing our shipping and freight while creating methodology for how we ship, as well as doing sales/budget reports for our sales team……..

In November I did my probation review, the owner was very happy with the initiative I showed and told me in 2-3 months we will meet again do a performance review and bump me up to $24/25 an hour.

Fast forward to yesterday, (2 months after the promised date) I met with the owner and the sales V.P who is the owners right hand basically. They said they couldn't justify paying me $24/25 with the work I was doing currently (the owner was okay months ago , but I think the VP talked him down). The VP said he knows that invoicing and doing what I do does not take me a full day and I agreed that If I had more accounting responsibilities I could make time to get it all done. But that was the issue, they told me there is no where in accounting for me to move and that basically what I was doing was a dead end role. They recognized I have more potential and proposed that I could become the companies marketing manager? The role was not defined and they brought it up on a whim kind of going with the flow. I said I was interested, however I would need something more concrete with a job description, deliverables etc……

My issue is, we currently do not have a marketing department, we just have a guy that works on the website and kind of makes brochures and runs the social media. They want me to take this to the next level essentially. My thing is it feels like they are setting me up for failure, The industry we work in is a lot of B2B sales so marketing isn't necessarily a huge thing as it would be for consumer products like Apple. I have no previous marketing experience and there will obviously be a huge learning curve as I have to learn to market/industry and our products.

We are meeting again on Friday and they will propose the job with a concrete description/pay/deliverables i guess? What questions, concerns should I be bringing up when it comes to this meeting to protect myself and make sure I am not set up for failure? Should I even pursue this? I enjoy the concept of marketing and it interests me but I will once again have no training or a person to learn from/mentor me?

Thoughts and opinions please and thank you.
