I have nothing against the company I work for, but the industry I work in is soul crushing. After years of contemplation, I figured out exactly what industry (or at least what role) I belong in for the remainder of my career back in mid-2020. Since then, I gained a new position at my company and have acquired skills that may translate to the new field I want to switch to. My goal starting then was to perform my new role long enough to look good on a resume and possibly start looking for new work in spring 2023. I even took up some casual volunteer work to bolster my resume even further.
Enter present day. I'm mere months away from my target goal, and everyone is worried a recession is about to hit. A quick Google search suggests a recession may (or may not) hit us in late 2023/early 2024. The last thing I want is to be a fresh face at a new company if a recession causes said company to make staff cuts. As a newbie, I fear I would be first on the chopping block.
I'm not really sure what my intention was behind writing this (or if this is even the correct subreddit to post to). I think part of me wants to be told, “Nah, a recession definitely isn't happening,” but I know none of us really know for sure. As it stands, I don't know what else to do except wait out the storm. But the thought of continuing to work in my current field for an additional year feels daunting.
