I recently applied for a developer position at some company, the company sent me a coding challenge with a one-week deadline, I spent a couple of hours on it and delivered the next day.
I had an interview with the hiring manager yesterday and he asked me about the app I built, I shared my screen and showed him what I did, he asked me a few questions regarding my experience, etc.
Then he gave me his feedback, which it felt a lot like personal attacks:
“You are prolix, did nobody ever tell you this? I hope it doesn't affect you in the future…”
“You have not used any design patterns in your code”
“You don't seem to know theory very well”
“You shouldn't say all those things to an HR person” (he told me he was a technical person at first).
I don't think these remarks were accurate and don't think he had the ability to judge my skills for this job.
I thanked him for his feedback and agreed to him that explaining technical things to an HR person is indeed unnecessary, but said “You told me you were a technical person at first”.
This was a remote interview and I ended up the interview saying that the market is hot and wished him good luck with finding a developer.
I wouldn't lie if I didn't say that this doesn't have an effect with how I am feeling today, sheesh.
