Most of you won’t give a shit about this as it’s in “China”.
The Hong Kong education system employed a considerable number of Native English Speakers to teacher classes. The government education department runs an English teacher program that is next to impossible to get into and pay incredibly well.
For the rest of us. Schools are given grants to hire English teachers. The schools have no experience in hiring or HR and farm this out to agents.
The agents hire a teacher and keep 30-40% of the salary each month. This “salary” filters down to private tutoring centres who will pay the same as teachers are paid by their agents.
No matter where you work the system is gamed.
In the past 2 years I have indirectly paid my agent $18K USD for doing little other than finding me the job and arranging unpaid PTO.
This system is engrained in the education culture. There’s no changing it.
Given this: What can be done to change it?
