Heard my coworker talking today about how she was thinking about quitting so that she can either be a stay-at-home mom or get a lesser paying job just so she could keep getting assistance for her child’s insurance. I guess they had the state assistance insurance for her child, but the price recently increased 4x as both her and her husband got recent raises. They could no longer afford it so they canceled the insurance in hopes to add him to our company insurance, but was then quoted it to be $1,000 per month if they added her child onto the plan (the child also had some sudden medical issues come up so they’re scrambling to pay for things). She talked about how they are over the threshold for state medical insurance and food stamps, but are still struggling to afford basic necessities.
My other coworker was also sharing a story about how a family member got a raise at her job but begged the company not to give it to her because she’d then lose her food stamps and insurance.
This is sick world we live in. The “middle class” people are barely scraping by while the rich buy social media platforms & go on billion dollar 10-minute space rides just because they can.
