screw work loyalty- after a year of work, hours suddenly zero due to “medical issue”

my profile is new because I just needed to vent somewhere but don't really want it tied to me outside of reddit. sorry if i have to be somewhat limited with info. Basically I've worked as a on-call position at my current company for just a little over a year. Although I'm on call for the whole last year, every week I've worked full time hours (32-40 hours) consistently. we have been very short staffed, to the point of almost shutting down but luckily we havent. I have worked every single shift asked of me. anytime someone called out; last minute requests; no shows; walk outs. I've ALWAYS came in whenever asked. ive never turned down a shift. ive never been late, never left early, never called out. i have worked every holiday and every weekend since December of last year. i work with a team of full timers and…

i work with a team of full timers and on-calls. there's only 2 other on-calls and their availability is very low, compared to mine so its mostly been just me working on call. its important to note that its not a high paying job. its only 18$ a hour but it was really needed for me.

for the last 2 months I've been experiencing some really random chest and side pains, to the point of multiple ER trips(always during off hours and I've never missed a shift due to these issues). my boss( who is mostly the boss of the schedule, and the on-calls, is aware of these issues.

well turns out its cancer….it was a shock and for being pretty young(late 20s) this was scary to hear. but luckily for me the doctor is hopeful they caught it very early and its treatable. My doctor cleared me for continued employment with no restrictions at this time, which is good because my job really doesnt require much(its mostly sitting for 8 hours and “babysitting” people sleep.) I did inform my boss (who again isn't the main boss. he's a supervisor of one part of the large program.) when i told him he kept saying “if you have cancer you shouldn't be working. you should be at home resting.”

but the thing is i REALLY need to work! this job has made it so i can actually survive financially. Without it I'd loose everything. the new schedule came out and for some reason i now have ZERO hours for the next 3 weeks! I'm only scheduled for one shift! after working 10 every two weeks. now its suddenly and without explanation zero shifts!

I went to talk to my boss and I dont feel like it went well. My boss stated that they made the choice to reduce my hours so that I can rest and heal from the trauma of cancer. I kept telling my boss that im fully cleared for all requirements for the job and that I wont even start treatment right away and that they dont anticipate it having a major issues. I just find this so frustrated that the boss didnt even bother to have a conversation with me or ask what i need!!

screw the loyatly i gave them!! they didnt even bother to ask me what it is i needed!!! the last thing i want is to be stuck at home like that!! aghhhhhh thank you for listening to my random complaint tonight. i hope everyone is having a good night!!
