Secretly being micromanaged

Let me start back from a few months ago. I work in marketing (mid/entry level) at a home healthcare company and I left back in December of 2021. I was being underpaid and overworked and left the company on good terms “just in case” the new job didn’t work out. I started doing marketing for a mortgage company and after 2 months quickly realized it was a very toxic environment. I went to my boss at the healthcare company and told them what was happening and that I was interested in coming back part time and that I was in the process of getting my real estate license; and that I was planning on doing the mornings and early afternoons there, and working in real estate nights and weekends. Because I left things on good terms, my old boss welcomed me back with open arms and appreciated me being honest…

Because I left things on good terms, my old boss welcomed me back with open arms and appreciated me being honest with her in my future endeavors. Even though the mortgage company paid more and had better benefits, it wasn’t enough to handle how back of a toxic environment it was.

Fast forward to mid February when I restarted at the healthcare company. Everyone was very excited to have me back except for the payroll person. Her passive aggressiveness showed that she wasn’t too thrilled having me back, but honestly I didn’t care because she’s not my boss and we are different departments. We do paper time sheets (old school I know) and ever since the day I’ve come back she’s been questioning all my clock in and clock out times. She never used to do this before. I do not lie on my time card because I have no reason too, but it irks me she questions it.

A few days ago she made an off handed comment to me that she’s “tired of seeing old employees come back groveling to the owner of the company and getting what they want. The owners just a pushover.” Which is literally not what happened in my case.

I ended up getting a pay raise coming back because my boss knows all the work I do. My paycheck hasn’t been correct in the last month, so I went up to the payroll person and said my hourly wage went up and I can provide the offer letter I signed. She looks at me and says “wait you left us and you got a raise coming back??” I said yes and that I will email the owner to confirm, with her cc’d.

My paycheck still isn’t correct but I can tell I’m now being micromanaged by the payroll person and not my boss. (My boss is owner of the company) The payroll person listens to all my calls and questions me on why I say certain things or tells me what I should be doing differently. I can also tell she watches me come and go and I feel like I’m being micromanaged. Technically Ive been working at the company longer than she has, but I have a feeling she’s out to get me fired or written up. I haven’t done anything wrong but I hate the feeling that I have eyes on me at all times.

I don’t have concrete proof, but whenever she tries calling me out on anything I have answers and I can tell she isn’t happy. This isn’t the first time she’s done this to an employees. She is notorious for being “teachers pet” if that makes sense. I just happen to be her new target.

Once I get my real estate license I will be fully transitioning to 20 hours a week and then over the course of a year or so I’ll move over to working full time as an agent and leaving the company. Can’t wait not to ever work for another person again. But till then I have to deal with this nonsense.
