serious question: Why is death never an option vs living in permanent misery?

So something that always confused me is why for the far far far majority of the population. Death is never an option to be considered. Like I understand if you have true hope based on things, if you have dependents that will be worse off without you, religion, or if you are giving it some time to see if it gets better. But it's odd that if you have zero evidence things will get better, you been miserable for some time, and it's not an option. I wonder this because I see a lot of people who know they will never retire, they are barely able to survive, they complain constantly, and they don't see a way out for a number of years now. Edit Why the down vote? I'm seriously trying to figure out this. I don't even understand why it's taboo outside of religion.
