Short Term Disability Denied

A close family member of mine has struggled with mental health for quite some time, and has recently started seeing a therapist and psychiatrist, as they were on the verge of a full mental breakdown. During this time they requested short term disability through their employer and went through the process of filling out all the paperwork while seeing doctors and trying to figure life out. The doctor has suggested that they have BP1 and will need to continued appointments to confirm this diagnosis. During this time, the short term disability was denied and they are now expected to report to back to work and re-pay the premiums for insurance, plus an overpayment ($1,700) during these 6 weeks off. What are our options here? Since they are close to an actual diagnosis can they appeal the S-T-D denial? Apologies for the lengthy post but any help is appreciated…
