I have been at my company for a little over 2 years, it’s my first corporate job out of college.
At this years performance review, my manager toyed around with the idea of giving me a “small” promotion if i successfully finish one of
my projects. At this company there are a few tiers of promotions/non-managerial positions: 1, 2, 3, 4. I am currently at 1, the manager was talking about a potential promotion to 2.
I was hesitant, because 90% of my team members who had been promoted in the past went straight from 1 to 4. However, they all spent years working at our retail locations prior to transferring to the corporate office (they went retail > 1 > 4). My situation is a bit different, and i’m not sure whether I should even be asking for a promotion to a 3 or a 4 since i’ve been with the company for much less time.
For reference, I have always gotten perfect performance review scores, and my
boss always says he’s very happy with the work i do.
I have recently applied for a “4” position in a different department and unfortunately did not
get the job – my manager knew about this and was very supportive throughout the process.
I’m not sure whether this will have a negative impact on potential promotion negotiations. I will be done with my project in about a month or two, and would like to negotiate a promotion.
Any tips on how to go about this? Should I ask for a 3 or 4 or should I just accept the 2 that was offered?
I’ve been feeling pretty disheartened lately, with the seemingly lowball promotion talk and the other job I didn’t get…
