I started working at a small but profitable shop part-time in July. I only have one co-worker and then the owner. Owner and I get along great but co-worker and I have been at odds for a bit now.
Some background… I got hired at $20/hr w/ promise of a $5 raise. I got my raise early bc I was doing really well in my position, have good experience and credentials.
After a few months of my only co-worker consistently making me pick up his slack and bragging about how much he was the highest paid there bc he was the best there is and whatever else I started to feel resentful. I decided to asked for another raise to be paid equally to my co-worker at $35/hr.
Boss said no to that much of a raise bc he couldn’t afford to pay us both $35. He agreed to pay me $30/hr starting December (my 6 month anniversary at the shop). Even though I outperform my co-worker in almost every aspect of the job (not to mention regularly having to clean his piss off the toilet seat) I agree to the $30/hr since it’s better than $25 and I’m still part-time & new to the position.
Since co-workers attitude got so bad at one point I’ve really since stopped working w/ him as much as possible. He is leaving the position in February and I am in a good position to take over managing the shop.
I want to ask for another raise in February when I am asked to go full time since I’ve offered to go full-time before and was denied because my co-worker wanted the hours & limits how many extra hours I can take on bc I hate being there when he is there.
I think it’s fair to say my labor rate has gone up since the last time I offered to go full-time.
Can I get some advice/thoughts generally on the situation? What’s the best approach to take?
I don’t get benefits at full-time but there are a lot of nice perks to the job & I love working there sans annoying co-worker.
