Prior to the Covid lockdown, the store had a full time general manager and 5 other employees. Following the lockdown, our general manager left about a month earlier than her planned date of resignation (this was months in the making) and when we reopened the schedule was very irregular and only 3 of us worked for about 4-6 months after reopening. By the early months of 2021, we had 5 of us, but we soon after lost one, and from then until about 2 months ago, we operated with 4 employees. None of us are a general manager, but all of us had keys and could open and run the store. I am a full time graduate student and a cadet as well, so this has been a part time job (increasingly part time) for me through undergraduate and now graduate school. Between that and some others working second jobs too, the lack of a general manager is very apparent. Employees have to schedule days off with each other with no central scheduling for those days, which has caused passive aggressive attitudes and frustration between employees and at one another. While Covid did cause financial loss, in an average of 13 fewer open store hours a week since summer of 2020, the store is making the same amount as pre-Covid if not more per month and year. There just aren’t enough of us to cover one another at times. Now we have 3 experienced employees and two with less than 3 months experience. The issue is worse off for the time being and other employees have even just ignored conversations about coverage… it’s just not sustainable.
