To give an overall background, I work for a medical company. A multi billion dollar medical device company. Privately owned by one person. Shit wages, like they recently raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour, but before that they were paying people 12, 11, even 10 an hour. So they raised the minimum to $15 an hour, but basically froze raises. They brag every chance they get about how they are becoming an xx billion dollar company by this year, how good we are doing, but pay us shit.
Lots of unhappy people in the company, they are hemorrhaging workers like no other. Chick-Fil-A will pay you the same amount they will pay a machine operator with 5 years experience. I know because, well read further.
Recently, as one of their tactics to keep people, they sent out an email containing a spreadsheet, that would tell you your “ACTUAL” salary, lmfao. Basically what it did was you put in your DoB, hourly rate or salary, an some other information, and it would add on what they pay for your medical care, vision, dental. LOL.
I opened it, downloaded the spreadsheet, checked it out, forgot about it after ranting about it to some coworkers.
Queue today. I see on the companies employee page, the same 'SALARY CALCULATOR', but with an interesting note. I see, THIS ISNT THE ONE THAT WAS EMAILED or something like that. Interested, I wanted to see what they changed. I opened the spreadsheet, and immediately was dumbfounded on what couldn't be possible. The excel spreadsheet was shared with everybody in the company, and everybody had edit permissions. You had to edit the document in order to input your pay info. Well, you could download a copy, and open it locally but most people aren't that knowledgeable.
Oh boy. For those of you who don't know there is something called version history in excel. So every time somebody in the company opened it up, put in their salary/hourly rate, date of birth, their bonus percentage, all this juicy juicy information, it would auto save the document.
So I go to version information, and am presented with the Names of people who edited it, which could be looked up in the employee directory, their date of birth, their salary or hourly rate, whether they had medical care or dental care, oh man.
I immediately share this with my friend at work. I walk up and am like, holy shit you won't believe this. We go over people's salaries we know, dumbfounded on how much supervisors and managers make, oh and directors, yeah the typical fucking 10x or 20x my salary with huge 30-50% bonus percentages (mine was 2%)
So, here's where it gets super fucking funny. I ask my friend, who do we tell that will tell everybody? We decide on a victim person. I go up to him, heyyy buddy, wanna see something really fucking insane? I load up the page and explain how to view everything. A few minutes later, there are people gathered around his desk, looking through everybody's wages. Lots of people are pissed. I am dying laughing. You can see who is currently viewing the spreadsheet through excel online. I see a manager view it, then a few seconds later, I see the director of human resources view it lol. A few seconds later it is deleted, and the article on the company web page is gone.

But noot before a lot of people got a decent view of a lot of peoples' salaries, including a director or two. So fucking Karmic, they try and pull a shady tactic and including stuff that a majority of companies pay for anyway into their salaries, and it bites them right in their ass.
Man I am still laughing about it.

TLDR; company tries pulling shady tactic to inflate your salary, backfires, tons of salary info leaked.
