So proud of my brother today

My younger brother took a job about 6 months ago that had a lot of red flags. The owner made a lot of promises in his interview that didn't play out in reality, and even in the last few weeks has changed people's hours, cancelled a previously-announced benefits update, and been somehow SHOCKED that he can't retain people. My brother had a need to take off work near the end of July, for a single day, unplanned. A valid, personal, private reason. He had the time available, sent in proper notice, and was instantly flooded with text messages ranging from guilt trip – “this will hurt all of your coworkers, we're a family, etc” – to threatening – “a bad look for a new employee, think about your future here” – and even an attempt at a flat-out denial – “arrange your business on your personal time, I expect you…

He had the time available, sent in proper notice, and was instantly flooded with text messages ranging from guilt trip – “this will hurt all of your coworkers, we're a family, etc” – to threatening – “a bad look for a new employee, think about your future here” – and even an attempt at a flat-out denial – “arrange your business on your personal time, I expect you in.”

Rather than immediately rage-quitting or simply calling the labor board, he started a group thread with his fellow coworkers and sent screen shots of the texts. The group decided enough was enough. My brother had the texts, with a little explanatory note, printed on signboard and taped to the building door. (I would LOVE to post pictures but it would dox him). The whole crew came by and autographed the signboard, and quit en masse.

The owner/manager only learned about it from a friend and customer. He immediately threatened my brother for organizing a revolt and trying to harm his business. Even threatened to sue him for taping the sign to the door without permission. My brother took screenshots of those messages as well, and sent them all to a lawyer, along with the labor board. Today the owner announced the business is permanently closing.

What a proud day! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes! This is the power workers have, and it shouldn't be forgotten.
