So sick of getting paid bad but scared of for-profit work

I work at a nonprofit doing government affairs support work (non-lobbying) and I generally actually enjoy my job. Only thing is that I make like, $55k in DC. Nonprofit work is its own beast and is far far far from morally pure in many cases, but there's something about working for a for-profit company that freaks me out. I can't even conceptualize what a work day would look like.

I'm so sick of living off pennies. Even in a work environment I otherwise like. I had to sound like a greedy bitch but I want more money.
