Sold Like Cattle

I've worked for my company for 5 years now, but some of my coworkers have been there for 10, 14, 16, 25 years. We're a crew of maybe 16 people, with over half of them currently laid off for the winter season. It was just sprung upon us this morning, with no prior notice or even indication, that our boss has sold the company. Effective immediately. So immediately, in fact, that the new company who acquired their new herd of cattle was waiting in the wings to swoop in less than 5 minutes after the news was broken to us. With a “welcome to the team” presentation – talk about tone deaf. We have less than 24 hours to report for duty to a new company, with no comparable job titles. I don't even have anything stating what my new hours will be or what I'll be doing!

The new company was met with such stunned, frosty employees, they had to scrap their original plan of having us pick up our shit and continue our work day at our “new home” across town. They thought our crew would be up to acting as the movers – they wanted us to start carting equipment from our location to the new one across town! My commute time has tripled. Out of the kindness of their hearts, they gave us the afternoon to “process” what just happened.

You guys… I was literally sold today. My boss is getting paid per employee and per customer that is retained by the new company, which is why I got less than 24 hours notice and not 2 weeks. They didn't want me searching for other opportunities and literally no one has even asked if we WANT to be a part of the new company we've been sold to.

After record breaking profits this year, I'm shocked and hurt… and disgusted. It wasn't a great ride to begin with but still –

Cattle. He got paid per head of cattle. I think I puked in my mouth.
