I've been at my current job since December 2021. The pay isn't the best, but my benefits are really good. Back in January, I was made aware of a tumor in my jaw by my dentist. Biopsy confirmed its a cancerous tumor, which I had about a 3% chance of being diagnosed with. Since then I've been seeing various doctors coming up with a game plan to remove the tumor and reconstruct my jaw. My surgery has now been scheduled for April 21st, and I will have to be out of work for 6 weeks. I informed my supervisor who then told me I'd need to speak with HR to apply for FMLA. I went to see HR yesterday, just to be told that I need to be employed with them for a full year to qualify for FMLA. They told me I could apply for discretionary leave, which means it would be up to my supervisors whether or not I have a job to come back to, and if they don't approve it I can chose to resign and then reapply once I've recovered, but that would mean losing my health insurance in the middle of this. If I end up having to resign I will not return. I just don't understand making me jump through hoops to go 6 weeks without Pay. Same crap either way.
