Start shaming companies more for this.

I see a lot of posts about people (whether they are employed at a business or not) shaming people who are rude to staff who are 'just trying to help' or 'the only one that came in today' because we are short staffed. Don't get me wrong, people just shouldn't be pieces of shit to customer service/employees PERIOD. However, the business itself should not even BE OPEN if the best they can do is a single person or a staffing number that simply puts all of those who ended up coming in through stress, anxiety and sometimes trauma (depending on customer's behavior). Its SO SHITTY for a company to simply force people who come in to take the brunt force of the customer response to the company or business's poor decision to stay open. I worked at a chain years ago that experienced a malfunctioned sprinkler. It put inches of standing water everywhere, outlets were smoking in the dining room and the district manager FORCED US TO STAY OPEN. I spent my entire shift squeegeeing the cafe for basically no reason because at this point this should have been a ServePro issue given safety and the fact the floor leveling was done poorly when the cafe was built and water gathered far too much in places that we would have to disturb production to get to. We should be shifting a good amount of blame to the actual company for staying open despite staffing issues.
