Started a new job only to find out it’s nothing like it was advertised or during the interview process

I quit my comfortable but ultimately dead-end private sector job for what I thought is an exciting opportunity within a government position. I felt like I was being pushed out at the private sector job due to a new manager being a micromanaging tyrant who seemed to have it out for me from day 1. I had been in that job for over a decade and knew how to do my job & did it extremely well.

So when I scored a new position within the public sector I was very excited and even partly for a change from my previous field

First week at the new job? I’m being blindsided by intense tasks and literally no training. No manuals either. I’m expected to just ‘know’ what to do. I can’t even figure out the layout of the building and keep on getting lost because no one will give me a map(??).

The last guy in the position? He left months ago. So no training or overlap. His manuals? Written in 2020 with out of date information and stream of consciousness ramblings. Nothing methodical or simply step by step instructions per task. I don’t even know where the programs are he used to log jobs or issues or who to turn to as there’s seemingly no contact list.

During the first week I’m being told I am doing tasks that were never discussed or advertised. This is a entry level position, bottom of the pay scale for public sector, but I’m expected to do an insane amount of tasks outside my actual capacity to do so.

There’s no training packages. No one had thought about it prior to onboarding. Just verbal requests and expectations.

My manager? Oh he’s quitting next month so I’ll be taking over a lot of his tasks & duties as they don’t want to replace him. He doesn’t even have time to help train me now or seemingly wants to (he’s winding down so obviously doesn’t care).

I feel like I’ve been had. I quit my comfortable job to be here and was incredibly excited to be a part of the institution, bought a whole new wardrobe & all – ‘new job new me new life’ I thought.

I feel like shit. I don’t want to resign as it’ll look really bad and I’ve met some truly amazing people – it would be impossible for me to get a job within the public sector again if I just quit. Right?

Any ideas to help me here? Totally lost.
